The coastal challenge
New Brighton and Southshore properties can experience salt-laden winds and rapidly drying sandy ground. How much shelter a specific garden has can make a bigger difference than its suburb label.
- Check whether salt spray reaches the site.
- Observe morning and afternoon sun and wind.
- Identify fences and plantings already providing shelter.
Native coastal plants with a local connection
DOC describes ngaio, akeake, harakeke and coastal coprosma communities, with pīngao important for foredunes. These are ecological references rather than a blanket list for every residential garden.
- Select plants for their mature size and salt tolerance.
- Avoid disturbing protected dunes.
- Use sourced local-ecotype plants where restoration is the goal.
Maintenance and tidy-ups
Windblown debris, dry exposed beds and struggling hedges can make coastal upkeep different from a sheltered inland section. Agree pruning, mulch, lawn care and green-waste collection together.
