Scope a hedge before trimming
A long straight hedge is different from a tall boundary hedge, topiary or one growing against fences. A good brief states the approximate height, length, sides to be reached and amount of reduction needed.
- Take a wide photo and note the approximate dimensions.
- Confirm access to both sides and any neighbouring property issues.
- Ask whether cuttings are removed and included in the price.
Timing and plant health
Many hedges respond well to maintenance trimming, but severe reduction and pruning times depend on species. Check for nesting birds before cutting and avoid damaging plants during weather stress.
- Identify the hedge species if possible.
- Separate light shaping from major height reduction.
- Consider power lines, height and ladder safety.
Keep the boundary tidy
After trimming, fallen leaves and clippings can collect along paths, drains and fence lines. Agree who clears these so the job is actually complete.
Frequently asked questions
Can every hedge be cut right back?
No. The amount of regrowth after hard pruning varies by species and plant condition.
Can a gardener trim a very tall hedge?
Some work may need specialist access or an arborist. Height and site safety should be assessed before booking.
Gardening in your suburb
Start with Linwood, Woolston or New Brighton for local planning notes. A good quote still depends on the actual property.
